ha scelto la maglia numero “32”, smentendo tutti quelli che pensavano che prendesse la “9”.
Suo padre, Paolo, è un insegnante di tennis e Leonardo ha giocato anche da giovanissimo. Ma una volta iniziato a giocare a calcio non ha mai guardato più indietro.
Il giocatore livornese è sbocciato tardi. Dopo tre stagioni tra i Dilettanti con l’Armando Picchi, con 16 gol in 68 partite, ha fatto il suo debutto Serie A con Sassuolo in una sconfitta 7-0 contro l’Inter, il 14 settembre 2014 e ha segnato il suo primo gol in alto a volo in una perdita 2-1 a Palermo tre mesi dopo, quando era già 26.
Leonardo si trasferisce a Genova nel mese di gennaio 2015 e divenne ben presto un favorito folla con sei goal in dieci partite nella sua prima mezza stagione al club. Ha aggiunto 14 reti in 25 presenze nel 2015/16 e ha tre in nove in questa stagione.
