The Argentine ended the season on 36 league goals – one ahead of Gunnar Nordahl’s total which he set in the 1949-50 campaign with AC Milan
Gonzalo Higuain has set a new Serie A record by becoming the highest ever goalscorer in a single season.
The Argentina international scored a hat-trick in Napoli’s 4-0 win over Frosinone to reach 36 goals for the season, which puts him one ahead of Gunnar Nordahl’s total which he registered with AC Milan in the 1949-50 campaign.
Higuain comfortably finishes as Serie A’s top goalscorer this season, with Paulo Dybala his nearest challenger with 19 goals for Juventus.
But despite the striker’s record-breaking haul, Napoli still finished nine points behind champions Juventus, who won Serie A for a fifth consecutive season.
But finishing second means Napoli have automatically secured a place in next season’s Champions League, while third-placed Roma will have to reach the group stages via the play-offs.
